Health Insurance Information Counseling Assistance Program

HIICAP

In this issue of our Newsletter, we would like to highlight a group of very special volunteers and explain the wonderful service they provide. RSVP’s Health Insurance Information Counseling Assistance Program, better known as HIICAP, offers help to seniors confused by their Medicare benefits. HIICAP volunteer counselors, under the direction of Program Coordinator Maryflorence Brennan, receive extensive training and attend on-going update meetings to provide guidance to those with questions involving many health coverage issues such as:

  • Understanding the Medicare prescription drug benefit (Medicare Part D) and how to select the best plan.
  • Understanding low-income subsidy programs, including “Extra Help” and Medicare Savings Programs (MSP’s).
  • Understanding and applying for Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC).

HIICAP Counselors are available to assist you in either of two ways. You can speak to a counselor on the telephone by calling the HIICAP Help Line at 631-979-9490 extension 18. If you prefer a face-to-face counseling session, counselors are available at many libraries throughout Suffolk County. To find a library near you, a schedule can be found on the RSVP website here (pdf) or you can call our office at 631-979-9490.

Thank you HIICAP volunteers for your dedication and many hours of service to this important program.

Important Information From HIICAP
If you are Medicare eligible and have a Medicare Part D Prescription Plan, by and large you will save money using this plan; but sometimes your pharmacist can offer you a better price than your insurance. However, you must ask before you hand over your prescription. This works particularly well for getting a lower price for generic medications. If you question the pharmacy price, the pharmacist can inform you of the cost, but he or she may not offer it without your request.

Children's Center Volunteers A Visit to the Suffolk County Children’s Center at Cohalan Court

The Children’s Center at Cohalan Court in Central Islip provides a safe and nurturing place for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years while their parents attend to court business. While at the center, the children engage in supervised free play, arts and crafts and other activities. The staff promotes literacy by giving a new book to each child who attends the center and encourages parents to read to their children. Pictured in the center is RSVP Program Coordinator Denise Passarelli who stopped by the center to donate some new books. Volunteers are always needed; so if you would like to help at this wonderful RSVP partnering site, please give RSVP a call and speak to Denise. She can be reached at 631-979-9490 ext. 23.
