RSVP is pleased to highlight a very important and commendable partnering site located in Port Jefferson. Welcome Friends is a not-for-profit organization that provides a hot, nutritious meal to approximately 50-100 guests five days a week. Their volunteer staff has grown to more than 200 members. Working together with the Executive Committee and Coordinators, the volunteers form an outstanding team that addresses hunger in the Greater Port Jefferson community and work to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. These caring people create a sense of community for neighbors affected by hunger and poverty by serving them with dignity and respect in a safe, hospitable environment.

The following is the Welcome Friends Serving Schedule:

Tuesday 5 p.m. Christ Church Methodist Old Town Rd., Port Jefferson

Friday 5 p.m. First Presbyterian Church Main Street, Port Jefferson

As Marge Tumilowicz, current Welcome Friends President has shared, “gratitude cannot be adequately expressed for the encouragement and support that the Port Jefferson area community has provided to help our less fortunate neighbors.” (For volunteer information, please call RSVP at 631-979-9490 and ask for Denise or Terri.)

RSVP is delighted to welcome three new sites to our growing list of not-for-profit organizations in need of volunteers. Each site offers a variety of opportunities for you to make a difference. Please consider offering your support to one of these worthwhile sites and if interested, please call Denise or Terri at RSVP at their number listed above.

Fountainhead Congregation, East Northport: Volunteers are needed to help with activities for young children in the Enrichment Program with takes place on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you have knowledge of computers or an interest in science, the Fountainhead Mariposa group could use your help with the Family Assistance Program. Volunteers are also needed to help pick up and distribute food and help out on “Give Away” days.

Harmony House, Kings Park: This site’s Respite Care Beyond Reproach is in need of warm, loving volunteers to be a companion and share their love of music, exercise or just good humor with seniors who are being cared for in a small family-like setting. Help is needed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., or any time in between!

St. Johnland Nursing Center, Kings Park: Volunteers can be matched to any area of interest – from clerical to hands-on with the residents. They have a full calendar of events daily from sing-a-longs to arts and crafts, adapted exercise, book club, bingo, men’s club and much more. If you have a pet therapy dog, that would be welcomed too!

Many thanks to the Rainbow Senior Center, Tender Years of Club Moriches and all the RSVP volunteers who spend many hours knitting, crocheting, sewing blankets, scarves and Twiddlemuffs that are donated to folks in need at local nursing homes, hospitals and shelters. Your beautiful “work of the hands” is so greatly appreciated.
