Tender Years is a volunteer craft group of 19 ladies, each with her own unique talent. Phyllis Flynn has chaired this group for the past 13 years. They meet once a week in the Clubhouse at the Fairfield at St. James 55+ condominium community. Throughout the year, the ladies display and sell their hand-crafted items at various events in the Fairfield community. In December, they participate in the annual Tender Years Treasury co-sponsored by the Smithtown Senior Citizens Department and the Smithtown Recreation Department where children in grades K through 5 can purchase gifts for their family and friends. At the end of each year, all proceeds from their sales and raffles, as well as an occasional Chinese Auction, are donated equally between St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Suffolk County Make-A-Wish Foundation. Over the past 13 years, the craft group has donated over $50,000.
In 2011, they were so proud to become part of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Throughout the year, the ladies crochet and knit lap robes, children’s blankets, infant hats, twiddle muffs and scarves. We bring these to RSVP for them to distribute to their various charities.
The ladies celebrate, with honor, the Volunteer of the Year Award presented to them by RSVP!

AmeriCorps Seniors Pledge
I will get things done for America – to make our people safer, smarter and healthier. When faced with a pressing challenge, I will bring Americans of all generations together to strengthen our communities. When faced with children at risk, I will help them stay in school and on track for a brighter future. And when faced with older adults in need, I will provide support and compassion so they may age with grace and dignity. Working for the greatest good, I will use my lifetime of experiences to improve my country, my community, and myself through service. I am an AmeriCorps Seniors volunteer, and I will get things done.
